Joomla! Pizza, Bugs & Fun Had Been...Fun

This past Saturday Danico hosted Joomla Pizza Bugs and Fun (PBF). It was a worldwide event to help advance Joomla!4. This event was a great way to be apart of the Joomla community. The organizers prepared lots of documentation, videos and more to help the local organizers assist their participants.

What is Joomla

Joomla! is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) for publishing web content. Over the years Joomla! has won several awards. It is built on a model–view–controller web application framework that can be used independently of the CMS that allows you to build powerful online applications.

Joomla! is one of the most popular website softwares, thanks to its global community of developers and volunteers, who make sure the platform is user friendly, extendable, multilingual, accessible, responsive, search engine optimized and so much more.

When did it start

PBF started at 9 am in the respective time zones. The Joomla social media feeds is full of posts and pictures showing each locale.

How was it organized

The PBF organizers provided direction, list of issues to test, lists of topics that needed documenting and provided hundreds of alpha instances. They were on hand to assist throughout the entire time.

Our experience

For us here in Chicagoland, this event provided an opportunity for old friends to re-engage with our local Joomla community over Chicago style pizza from Lou Malnati's

With the availability of alpha instances of Joomla! 4, participants were able to explore and test without having to create an environment and installation of their own.

For newer users or those who are more end-user than developer, it enabled them to more easily be apart of the day. Joomla is a multilingual system and the documentation needs to reflect that. Reading, editing and adding screenshots to the expansive Joomla documentation in native languages makes it accessible by all.

The participants that are more developer types were a little disappointed that there was not more for them to test by the time they got started. However, the did enjoy exploring all of the changes.

How was the event overall

A recap will be out soon from the organizers, here are some preliminary numbers: over 250 tests, 2000 documentation changes, 54 merged PR and around 50 found bugs.  Overall, a GREAT success!
