Adding Lead Generation to Your Joomla! Website

joomla-lead-gen

Joomla! is one of the most widely-used content management systems (CMS) on the web. It runs nearly 2 million active websites, accounting for over 3 percent of the entire web.

Its popularity makes it a good choice for building a website because it's kept up-to-date and secure, with plenty of add-on features available. Let's look at how you can add lead generation to your Joomla! website.

What is Lead Generation?
Lead generation is the term used for the process of getting new contacts into your company's marketing funnel and converted into paying customers. It covers everything from getting new visitors to your website to adding them to your email or direct contact list.

The process works something like this:
Someone clicks on or responds to a call-to-action (CTA) of some type.
They're directed to a landing page on your website where they can get more information.
The landing page has an opt-in form where they can provide their contact information and become a new lead.

How to Integrate Lead Gen with Joomla!
There are three options for integrating a lead generation system with Joomla!:
  • Joomla! extensions
  • Hand-coding
  • Hosted services
The easiest of the three options is to use a Joomla! lead generation extension. Extensions are add-ons for Joomla! that add new capabilities to the system or automate things without having to code them manually.

Hand-coding is more flexible since you can do virtually anything you want but you need to have the necessary skills yourself or access to someone who has them. Hand-coded systems may also need ongoing maintenance as Joomla! gets updated with new features over time.

Hosted services work alongside your Joomla! site rather than integrating directly into it. A service like LeadPages lets you set up landing pages and lead gen forms on their website. You can design them to match your site and set up your CTAs to direct people there.

If you design the pages well, your visitors likely won't know they're on a separate site.

Finding Joomla! Extensions
The Joomla! website has an Extensions Directory (extensions.joomla.org) that includes thousands of extensions in many different categories. You can easily search for a Joomla! landing page plugin, lead generation extensions, and anything else you might want to add to your site.

The lead generation extensions are under Marketing.  Be sure to read through the reviews to see what kind of results others have had. Also, check when the extension was last updated to get an idea of how well supported it is. There are new ones added often.

Integrating with Lead Generation Services
If you're using an email service provider (ESP) like MailChimp, look for extensions that work with your ESP of choice. Some of them also support a service called Zapier that will connect services that aren't directly supported by the extension.

If you're coding your Joomla! landing pages by hand, you'll be able to integrate any service you wish. The ESP or other lead generation service should provide all the details you or your coder will need in their support documents.
